This volume aims to provide a comprehensive but readable overview of policing in the UK, reflecting the transformations that have taken place in recent years and the increasing professionalisation of one of the country's most important services. The "Handbook of Policing" is divided into four major sections. The first considers policing in its comparative and historical context, looking at the major models of policing and how policing has developed from its origins to the present day. The second section considers the context in which policing takes place, analysing domestic and international police structures, the relationship of policing to other forms of security provision and private policing. The third section looks at how the police operate, with sections on the analysis and investigation of crime, approaches to crime prevention, community safety, drugs, terrorism and organised crime, and the way policing if affected by and utilises new technologies.
