Plimmer retired from the West Midlands Police Force as Detective Superintendent in 1997, having been involved in the investigation of many high profile murders, leading the investigation into thirty-six - all of which were successfully concluded. He now lectures on serious crime management to post-graduates and trainee detectives. He is also a newspaper columnist and feature writer. Bob Long was a boy soldier who deserted from the army after three years and became a professional armed robber. He was held as a 'Category A' prisoner until 1986. Childhood friends, the two met again when Plimmer arrested Long at the scene of an armed robbery.
