Hands on History (Belair A World of Display History) - Softcover

Another winner from Belair World of Display. The Hands on History book offers much to primary age teachers. This cross curricular book brings the visual aspect of art into focus and many of the suggestions are three dimensional with the pictures showing how stunning the work can be when displayed. The generally thematic approach is clear offering ideas on work that is seen in many classrooms; homes, toys, the seaside, great fire of London, ancient Greece, ancient Egypt, ancient Britain, the Victorians, the Tudors, World War II, ancient Benin, the Aztecs and history projects. The short history projects projects section suggests using stories about the past that relate well to your school. As with all sections there are clear resource details, the suggested approach and a clear picture showing finished and displayed work.. The sections are further developed to offer ideas for development. For example the great fire of London section offers night fire collages, the streets are on fire, a puppet show and the Pudding Lane Bakery. Any or all of these would enhance the classroom environment and the children would learn much through the discussion and development of these displays. the work on the puppet show includes a discussion on what London would have been like, the work of Samuel Pepys and street life. I liked the idea of story boxes that were used in the section on Mary Seacole and Florence Nightingale in the Victorian section. This approach can be adapted and used in many situations.
