"The most remarkable feature of this book is that it is totally readable. One can sit down and read the entire book from cover to cover without being bored. Although not encyclopedic and not written in miniscule font, the chapters are interesting, timely, and well thought out. The first chapter deals with the epidemiologist and new classification. Since all the authors are either from the United Kingdom or Australia, it is not the typical ADA definitions and numbers (although they are also given). The subsequent chapters deal with obesity, hypertension, and microvascular disease. There is a wonderful discussion of the role of thiazolidinedinones and the role of 'designer' insulins. A topic often given only cursory attention is treated in depth, namely erectile disfunction. The final chapter is on the treatment of diabetic neuropathy.
