We meet his glamorous mother and his father, a pioneering plastic surgeon; a traumatised war veteran called Mr Beckwith with whom Alexander works for several years as a gardener and, most important of all, the orphaned Megan Beckwith, whose relationship with Alexander crystallises into a romance in the 1970s. Progressing year by year, the novel charts MacIndoe's relationships with the people who defined the shape of his life: his parents and schoolfriends: his employer Sidney Dixon, a patient of the great surgeon Archibald MacIndoe; the traumatised war veteran Harry Beckwith and his with Joan, the closest friend of Alexander's glamorous mother; and a sucession of lovers – above all, the orphaned Megan Beckwith, whose relationship with Alexander begins in 1946 and endures to the end.

A book about love, memory, the passage of time, death and contentment, Ghost MacIndoe is a deeply moving and elegiac novel, a celebration of the everyday.
