Reseña del editor

Following in the wake of his highly praised first two books, Jonathan Buckley’s Ghost MacIndoe is a bold and ambitious novel that focuses on the life of Alexander MacIndoe, a self-centred man who is characterised only by his physical beauty and a complete lack of will.

Jonathan Buckley’s third novel opens with Alexander MacIndoe’s earliest memory: a February morning in 1944, in the aftermath of the second wave of German air-raids. Set mainly in London and Brighton, Ghost MacIndoe is the story of the next 54 years of Alexander’s life. We meet his glamorous mother and his father, a pioneering plastic surgeon; a traumatised war veteran called Mr Beckwith with whom Alexander works for several years as a gardener and, most important of all, the orphaned Megan Beckwith, whose relationship with Alexander crystallises into a romance in the 1970s. In the wake of his highly praised first two novels, Jonathan Buckley’s third miraculously brings into being one simple life and the last sixty years of English history.

Contraportada

On a February morning in 1944, three-year-old Alexander MacIndoe witnesses the aftermath of a London air raid, and sees things that he will still remember more than half a century later. Ghost MacIndoe, Jonathan Buckley's third novel, follows the trail of MacIndoe's recollections through to the close of the twentieth century, creating an unforgettable character who is outwardly ordinary but whose experience of the world is poignantly detached, melancholic and intensely sensual.

Progressing year by year, the novel charts MacIndoe's relationships with the people who defined the shape of his life: his parents and schoolfriends: his employer Sidney Dixon, a patient of the great surgeon Archibald MacIndoe; the traumatised war veteran Harry Beckwith and his with Joan, the closest friend of Alexander's glamorous mother; and a sucession of lovers – above all, the orphaned Megan Beckwith, whose relationship with Alexander begins in 1946 and endures to the end.

A book about love, memory, the passage of time, death and contentment, Ghost MacIndoe is a deeply moving and elegiac novel, a celebration of the everyday.
