Cat behaviour
Cat behaviour is influenced by a variety of factors, including genetics and life experiences. It is important to be able to interpret and understand our cat’s behaviour so that we can provide the best welfare possible for that individual and prevent the development of potentially problematic behaviours. It is also helpful to have a good understanding about a cat’s behaviour to be able to successfully integrate them into a family. This is particularly important when housing them with other cats, dogs and/or children. In this chapter we will be covering:
- The factors that influence a cat’s behaviour.
- How to interpret cat behaviour.
- How to carry out a feline behaviour assessment, to measure cat sociability.
- Some initial guidance on socialisation, managing arousal and creating safe spaces.
First, however, we will introduce the FELID approach; which is the process we will follow like a checklist when introducing a cat to other cats, dogs, babies or children.
2.1 The FELID approach
The FELID approach is a guide that can be followed to establish and maintain safe and harmonious relationship between your cat and the rest of the family. This approach includes considering whether a cat can successfully live with other cats, dogs, babies and/or children, as well as how you can help develop a harmonious relationship within the household. The FELID approach includes five stages, as seen in table 2.1, which will be used as a guide throughout the next three chapters.
