A complete English translation of Stepan Raykovsky's Elementary Foundations of Geometry — a systematic course in plane and solid geometry, written for the theological schools of imperial Russia and never before published in English.

The book proceeds in the classical manner. Definitions, axioms and postulates first; then 310 numbered articles building from the straight line to the sphere, each proposition proved and each construction carried out in full. Four divisions cover the mutual relation of straight lines in a plane, the relation of a straight line to the circle, the measurement of plane figures and the proportions of their parts, and the geometry of solids — prisms, pyramids, cylinders, cones and the sphere.

All 157 figures are reproduced from the five engraved plates, given whole and in full as the author arranged them, so that each sheet can be read as it was drawn.

About this edition. The translation follows the original line by line, and the edition is built to be checkable: every page was read against the original, the numbered articles and figures were registered and paired both ways, and the whole text was audited independently before release. Where the original is demonstrably wrong — a transposed letter in a figure label, a cross-reference to an article that cannot support the claim — the correct reading is printed silently in the text.
