Alan Little inherited his father's bookmaking business but not his talent for it. Struggling to keep afloat, he clings to daydreams of Alice Teqar, the beautiful woman from his school days, and the rescue of his father's old assistant, Herbert, who looks at him with thinly veiled disdain. A particularly unprofessional but sympathetic action on his part results in him being given, in lieu of a debt, a strange looking contraption which the old lady claims to be a time machine. Nonsense of course. but if it did work what golden opportunities there are! All that is required is a trip back into the past and place wagers in races in which he already knows the result.
