Chapter One
July 1875
High on the hill overlooking a valley in Galley Common, a small mining village on the outskirts of Nuneaton, stood Oakley Manor, a large, imposing house surrounded by acres of landscaped gardens that had been the home of the Bellingham family for many generations.
On this beautiful summer day the youngest member of the Bellingham family, Lady Arabella, stood before her grandmother in the old lady’s bedroom with her chin on her chest as sobs wracked her body.
‘Oh, Arabella!’ Lady Bellingham said wearily. ‘Do you realise that your whole future is now at risk? Should Lord Lumley hear a whisper of this he will end your engagement and the family will be disgraced.’
‘I don’t care,’ Arabella said defiantly, raising her chin to stare back at her grandmother through striking blue eyes. ‘I never wanted to marry him in the first place. He is almost old enough to be my father! I only agreed to the engagement to please you, and Mama and Papa, but that was before I met Freddie. And I love him!’
‘Love, huh!’ the old lady said grumpily, leaning heavily on her ebony-topped walking stick. ‘You cannot die from love but you can die from cold and starvation and Freddie is as poor as a church mouse. Do you really think love will put food on the table and pay your bills? He is merely a captain in the army, whereas Lord Lumley is one of the richest men in the county. Married to him you will live like a queen. So put this young captain from your mind.’ Her grandmother paused and examined her granddaughter. ‘How many courses have you missed?’
Arabella sniffed. ‘F-four.’
‘Then the child should be due early in December. We have no time to lose.’ Lady Bellingham tapped her chin thoughtfully. ‘Go away, child, and leave things to me. Oh – and be sure to tell no one else, especially not your parents. Do you understand me?’
‘Y-yes, Grandmama.’
‘Well, what are we to do now? The silly, silly girl!’ Lady Bellingham said when the door had closed behind her.
Her maid, Hudson, who had served her for more years than she cared to remember, frowned. She had long since discovered that although her mistress could strike the fear of God into most people, her bite was actually nowhere near as bad as her bark.
‘It’s unfortunate but the girl has made it known from day one that she didn’t want to marry Lord Lumley. Happen it were only a matter o’ time before she met someone she fell in love with, and the young captain seems to be the one.’ She spoke as she would to one of her own class.
‘Rubbish!’ Her mistress scowled at her as she tried to think of a way to save the situation. Some minutes later, she said thoughtfully, ‘Hudson, the Moon girl, the one that just got promoted to parlour maid. What do you think of her?’
‘She seems a nice enough girl,’ Hudson answered as she tidied her mistress’s bed. ‘Well thought of by the housekeeper, apparently, and from a respectable family in the village.’
‘Hmm, well I have an idea. Go and tell the girl I wish to speak to her immediately.’
With a long-suffering sigh, Hudson went off to do as she was told.
They returned soon after, and Lily Moon bobbed her knee respectfully. ‘You wished to see me, ma’am?’ Her heart was thudding uncomfortably as she wondered why she had been summoned.
