Cousins, Kathleen, a lawyer and Disa Ropert,a writer, living in South Africa research their family tree and discover that their great, great uncle was William Ropert, a barrister, who, in 1839, was sent from Dublin to the Cape as the new Attorney General of the Cape Colony. They also find out that their great, great grandfather, Classon Ropert ,an antiquarian and man of the church, had lived in Ballygally Castle in County Antrim in Northern Ireland. Coincidentally Kathleen has the same qualities as William with a calling to defend clients who have been victims of an unfair political system. She leaves Cape Town in 1970 and begins the greatest adventure of her life as she settles in Salisbury in Rhodesia and engages in the defence of men and women accused of treason against the Rhodesian Government under Ian Smith. The novel reveals the history of Zimbabwe in the north of Southern Africa as seen through Kathleen’s eyes. She meets Moses Mwari who has a forward, Westernised outlook on life but also comes to fear Christian Kani, a freedom fighter or terrorist depending on one’s orientation. She eventually has to come to terms with the disintegration of a country after Mugabe becomes President and remains in power for more than three decades. She finds her true love even though his political views are contrary to hers. He disappears after his parents are murdered and becomes involved in the Bush War against the Matabele and Mashona freedom fighters. Kathleen marries Dominic a fellow lawyer, but deep in her heart she yearns for Ben.Land appropriation occurs when white farmers are forced to leave their farms with nothing after the Lancaster Agreement fails due to funding being insufficient to compensate the white farmers. The climax of the novel is unexpected and shocking. The final eclipse is a metaphor for the black dictatorship that succeeds in destroying the light of Western reason and enlightenment.
