Rice is life for more than half of humanity. Exploring ways to produce more rice with less water is essential for food security. Water-saving rice production systems, such as aerobic rice culture, system of rice intensification, ground-cover rice production system, raised beds, and alternate wetting and drying, can drastically cut down the unproductive water outflows and increase water-use efficiency. However, these technologies can sometimes lead to some yield penalty considering erratic behaviour of monsoon. Uncertain monsoon especially delayed onset, decreasing trend of rainy days and uneven distribution posed serious threat on the main rice hub i.e. eastern Indo-Gangetic plain. Delayed transplanting of aged seedling results not only delayed rice harvest with lower yield but also postpones sowing of winter crops. Thus winter crops also suffer due to limited cold span and problem of terminal heat stress. Sometimes very late onset of rainfall beyond first fortnight of July forced large section of our farmers to keep their land fallow. In this situation, we need healthy rice seedling that will be ready to transplant for a longer time without compromising productivity befitting the erratic behaviour of rain. Keeping this objective in mind, the book was written to understand the irregularities of onset and break on monsoon and to integrate all factors of nursery management including organic amendments, macro and micro nutrients, spacing, weed control, water management to produce healthy seedling that can wait monsoon to come for transplanting; to evaluate scope of increasing water productivity by reducing main field duration. Possibility of integration of existing cropping system with in-situ organic matter production, growing of rice after jute, timely sowing of winter crops especially rapeseed even after late onset of monsoon were discussed in details in a workshop organized by Bidhan Chandra Krishi Viswavidyalaya on 14.12.2018 at Ayodhya hill, Purulia, India. All the deliberations were compiled in this book to understand climate resilient, ecologically beneficial, remunerative and more water efficient rice production system.
