Roby is a modest, unpretentious android, endowed with special qualities giving him virtual human status. He finds himself enchanted with a cyborg, Bobbie. Her feelings for him reciprocate. Problems arise. Roby takes it upon himself to create a unique android self and a human-like Other, but senses failure. His withdrawn nature prevents his openly communicating with Bobbie. Racism, human and cyborg supremacism, and robotism plague them. And Roby’s apparently more-than-human capacities induce government high-tech investigators to prevent his creating progenies by altering his silicon mind-works. Roby consults friends and associates. They advise him. His superintelligence finds problems with their suggestions. He sets out to solve his problems basically his way. His efforts by and large find success. Bobbie knew he could realize his dream. Roby’s skeptical uncertainty leaves him with lingering doubts. Ultimately, paradox promises an incomplete yet inconsistently ambiguous future. It seems the natural course. For, vagueness saturated Roby’s past, ambiguity accompanied vagueness, and both dominate the story’s final pages. Leaving observers and readers with wondering perplexity.
