Fred Whitfield DFM served in the Royal Air Force as a rear gunner on Lancasters with IX Squadron based at Bardney in Lincolnshire. This fascinating account uses his log-book to provide a chronological view of some of the thirty operations he took part in. Among those operations were the famous raids on the Tirpitz and the Eagles Nest (Hitlers mountain retreat) at Berchtesgaden. In his role as a rear gunner he scored 3 1/2 ‘kills’.
