The long-sought goal of retirement becomes a little less desirable as it approaches. The loss of status in the work world, the lack of social/professional contact, the seldom considered change in home life. All these went through my mind as I neared my career's end. And I had few answers to the nagging questions of what to do. I had no hobbies, did not really watch much TV, and my wife was used to considerable independence since I traveled five days a week.Answers came rather abruptly when I decided to write a book, but that still didn't solve all problems. My real solution came when I answered a Wall Street Journal ad for a retired banker to go to Cluj-Napoca, Romania to consult with a new private bank. It was an assignment that lasted two months, gained a new fellow-volunteer-friend, and started my world wide journey. It was purely volunteer work, but all transportation, lodging and many other expenses were paid, so no out-of-pocket costs.In the next eleven years I got to see a world I knew little about. The tourist phase of travel included a three day safari in East Africa while working for Coop Bank in Kampala, Uganda; a visit to Kizhi Island with its strange cedar-built cathedral while teaching Russian Bank Examiners in Petrozavodsk, Russia; a two day adventure with a wildlife refuge center in Khabrovsk, Far East Russia; a boat trip in Suchon, China, the Venice of the East while teaching Chinese Bankers in Shanghai; and three days in the Persian city of Sulymania, Iraq, working with private bankers in 2005, and being educated in third world countries and their problems. Technology, systems, procedures and attitudes were shaped from dictatorial governments, common courtesy was rare. One of our most difficult challenges was to get front-line customer contact people to smile. There exist assignments for skills all over the world. Not necessarily professional skills, but the skills of bakers, auto mechanics and entrepreneurs of every kind. If you have a skill, crave travel, challenge and the flexibility to shift gears in your assignment, maybe this is your answer to retirement. The book relates some writing experience in the production of four published books, plus a recounting of the sometimes humorous, sometimes a little scary, sometimes bewildering episodes of my eleven year wandering career.
