Paul Cézanne, Georges Seurat, Paul Gauguin, Vincent van Gogh, Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec and others began as Impressionists but soon extended their explorations of the world around them to create highly personal work. With their foundations in the bright colours of Impressionism and the break from traditional representational art, the Post-Impressionists worked alone but collectively created the bridge into the expressionism of the 20th Century. Their delightful and evocative masterpieces are celebrated in this gorgeous new book.

Samuel Raybone (author) read History at Durham University before completing an MA and PhD in the History of Art at the Courtauld Institute of Art. His doctoral research centred on Gustave Caillebotte in the context of late-nineteenth-century class and labour politics, bringing to light the artist’s myriad labours and the complexities of his class-bound alienation. His wider research connects broader, Naturalism, and Post-Impressionism to the wider sphere of visual culture. Samuel teaches at the Courtauld Institute and Oxford University.
Gavin Parkinson (foreword) was a BA student in Manchester, then completed his MA at The Courtauld in 1997, followed by a PhD in 2000. After lecturing at Birkbeck College and the University of Oxford, he joined The Courtauld teaching staff as a Lecturer in 2008 and became a Senior Lecturer in 2014. Gavin’s teaching and writing are concerned with European art and visual culture of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, with a special interest in French Surrealism. His books include: Futures of Surrealism: Myth, Science Fiction and Fantastic Art in France 1936–69; Surrealism, Art and Modern Science: Relativity, Quantum Mechanics, Epistemology; and The Duchamp Book.
