Hilda Hayo is Chief Admiral Nurse/CEO at Dementia UK. She set up the Younger People with Dementia Team in Northamptonshire and is a founding member of the Forget Me Nots young onset dementia social group. Alison Ward is a health and social care researcher and is also a founding member of the Forget Me Nots. Jacqueline Parkes is a mental health nurse, Professor of Applied Mental Health, Lead for Dementia Research at the University of Northampton, and Chair of the Dementia Friendly Community of Practice (UoN).
Through detailed case studies and key learning points for practice, this book explores the lived experience of people with young onset dementia and shows how to deliver better and more appropriate support and care for individuals and families.It explains the need for adapting services which are often designed for older people, and how the complicated diagnostic process can lead to misdiagnosis among younger adults. Key issues are considered, including at-risk groups, potential loss of employment, changes in relationships, adjusting life expectations, and social isolation, with practical advice for dealing with these issues.
