Effectively combines various methodological approaches from cultural history, anthropology and labor studies. Engages the literature on the Bohemian Lands as well as broader, thematic literatures on labor, gender relations, late 19th century scientism, Habsburg rule, and the experiences of World War I. Deals wit a region not hitherto sufficiently covered in the English-speaking scholarship. Gives rich references on relevant literature in English, German and Czech and can thus serve as a welcome introduction for broader interest. Introduces a completely new narrative of the nexus between work and/or food on one side and everyday life on the other.
