The second part of the book is a structured course of 12 workshops, which build from the most basic hand-sewing techniques through to more advanced dressmaking skills. At the end of each workshop, there is a step-by-step project, which reinforces the skill mastered in the workshop. The projects range from simple hand-embroidered cushions to a lined throw, and from a shirred sundress to an organdie pleated skirt. Techniques include embroidery, patchwork, quilting, dressmaking, and curtain-making, and there are useful tips and shortcuts throughout the book.

Jane Bolsover has over 20 years’ experience as a designer and writer specialising in sewing and crafts. She was sewing editor on Essentials magazine, contributes to magazines, has written several books on soft furnishings, and now works as a consultant for a major textile and craft show company, for whom she organises craft demonstrations, workshops, and displays. She is the author of Sewing Machine Basics (ISBN 978-1-907030-7-4), also published by CICO Books, and holds workshops at major UK department stores. The author is based in Surrey, UK.
