Part one of Machine-to-Machine (M2M) Communications covers machine-to-machine systems, architecture and components. Part two assesses performance management techniques for M2M communications. Part three looks at M2M applications, services, and standardization. Machine-to-machine communications refers to autonomous communication between devices or machines. This book serves as a key resource in M2M, which is set to grow significantly and is expected to generate a huge amount of additional data traffic and new revenue streams, underpinning key areas of the economy such as the smart grid, networked homes, healthcare and transportation.

Machine-to-machine (M2M) communications refers to autonomous communication between devices/machines. M2M uses a device such as a sensor to collect data, the data is then transmitted through a wireless communication network to an application that processes such data and provides an appropriate response. In the coming years, M2M is set to grow significantly and as a result it will generate a huge amount of additional data traffic and thereby generate significant new revenue streams.
After introducing M2M communications, Part I of this book covers architectures and standards. Part II looks at access, scheduling, mobility and security protocols within machine-to-machine communications. The third section reviews network optimisation for M2M, with chapters analysing aspects of energy saving and performance. The final part to the book reviews the application of M2M in a business setting, examining business models and applications within e-health and smart cities.
M2M technology will increasingly underpin key areas of the economy and this title will be an important reference for academic researchers as well as those in the electronics, computer engineering, telecommunications and networking industries.
