The text itself reads well, and its poetry and puns are good. However, the translator-Anatolii Frenkel¿ a.k.a. A. D'Aktil¿ (1890-1942)-cuts quite a repulsive figure. Frenkel¿ was a creator of enthusiastic hymns praising the new dictatorial regime. Known to the millions over the decades was his March of Budenny's Cavalry (1920). ''Give us Warsaw, give us Berlin-and here we plough into the Crimea!'')-a message of the World Revolution carried on the bayonets of the Red Army. Frenkel¿'s Alice translation bears no traces of his Communist allegiances or a recent Civil War propaganda. His puns are quite inventive, with especially good phonetic equivalents for Carroll's school puns.
