The Watson telling the tale is one of the most engaging I have met. He has the loyalty, the manners and the honesty all Sherlockians have come to revere along with a knowing twinkle in his eye. Holmes is Holmes, a bit older than we are accustomed to, but with the keen eye and lack of pretense, inhibition or tact we all associate with him. The other characterizations in the story are well-done, producing sharp images and clear impressions. The result of reading this book is a desire to visit Lyme Regis and a hope to see more of this comforting Watson, who is just what one always felt Watson should be. --Philip K Jones, creator and maintainer of Sherlock: a database of Sherlockian pastiches
David Ruffle has taken on the challenge of writing a short novel in the style of Dr Watson, and all in all he does pretty well. It's very easy (I speak from experience) to become stilted or florid or verbose. Mr Ruffle largely avoids the stylistic traps. Mr Ruffle paints a vivid picture of Lyme and its harbour. The characters are distinct individuals: the charming landlady, the insufferable police inspector, Watson's friend the local doctor, and all the others. And the plot is undeniably exciting! --Roger Johnson, The Sherlock Holmes Society of London
This new take on a traditional property combines two old favourites from Victorian literature - Sherlock Holmes and a certain fanged gentleman. A cracking good read told in lovingly resurrected Victorian prose style, from the point of view of Watson, it gives a great insight into both characters. It also lovingly conjures up the seaside town of Lyme Regis, to the point where you feel you are walking down the streets with the characters. A delightful fusion of styles and concepts --Lucy Daniel Raby, author of Nikolai of the North

Sherlock Holmes and Lyme Regis ? Inspired. What I enjoyed most about this pastiche was the strong friendship between Holmes and Watson, couple that with loads of local colour and an authentic line in Watsonian dialogue and you have a recipe for a delightful read. There are several shorter tales and one of them concerns an older Holmes and Watson at Xmas time, it is a very poignant tale but the real treasure is the novella itself. --Hugh Fountain, Western Daily Press
The year is 1896. Doctor Watson is invited to the Dorsetshire coast by an old friend. To Watson's surprise he manages to persuade his good friend, Mr Sherlock Holmes to accompany him. This hitherto unknown tale of Watson's involves romancing, dancing, occasional glasses of cider, but the holiday turns into a nightmare as the two old friends encounter an unimaginable evil which threatens their very souls. Can they triumph? - Fully revised and expanded 2nd edition.
