Roman Emperor Marcus Aurelius never intended his “Meditations” to be a public text. Instead, he set about creating a transparent examination of his own life, as well as a personal philosophical resource aimed at assisting the ruler to pursue what he believed to be the correct moral path. With no audience other than himself to write for—and with none of the self-censorship and guarded techniques that so often come with this—Marcus Aurelius crafted a startlingly honest and beautiful examination of thought, ideology, religious experiences and timeless wisdom in Ancient Rome and across its sphere of influence.
The simple and straightforward style of the work reflects Marcus Aurelius’ own views on Stoicism—a philosophy of personal virtue and ethical logic. While Stoic thinking was first introduced by the Greek thinker Zeno several centuries before the time of Marcus Aurelius, its influence still permeates strongly throughout these pages. Renowned English classical scholar George Long provided the translation for “Meditations”, giving modern English readers a fascinating glimpse into the mind of one of antiquities most renowned rulers.
Marcus Aurelius was born into an aristocratic Roman family during the height of the Roman Empire. He was adopted as a son by his uncle Emperor Antoninus Pius, and reigned as Emperor from 161-180 AD. His reign was marked by numerous military conflicts on the German frontier and the Eastern border with the Parthian Empire. Despite these conflicts the Empire flourished in relative peace and prosperity under Marcus’ rule. The end of his reign is often considered the end of the golden era of the Roman Empire, in many ways he was the last great Emperor of Rome.
Marcus ruled as a philosopher king, he applied his Stoicism to his everyday life. “Meditations” is an excellent source for understanding ancient stoic philosophy, and is often praised along other ancient philosophers like Plato, Aristotle, Socrates, Seneca, and Epictetus. It is a rare primary source into the mind of a man who ruled over one of the greatest empires ever built.
“Meditations” is a collection of personal reflections and philosophical insights, written during Marcus Aurelius’ time as a military leader and ruler of the Roman Empire. Covering a wide range of topics related to Stoic philosophy, such as rationality, wisdom, humility, perseverance, inner strength, and the nature of the universe, the text provides readers with practical advice on how to cultivate virtues such as wisdom, justice, courage, and self-control. The enduring relevance of the book to modern readers have made it a classic philosophical text of Western Civilization.
