We welcome and encourage tourists of all kinds in Gwelf. The survival guide will tell you what to expect, what equipment to pack, who to trust and hire as a guide, and where to rest for the night in this magical land steeped in history and mystery. Indeed, so charming and wondrous is Gwelf that occasionally tourists decide to stay and become citizens, joining the ranks of the border patrol; settling in a town as a merchant, artist, or voyeur; or simply retiring to the country or farmlands. Tragically, there have been some that have stayed, but not by choice. We, the council, fear that this has cast a negative light on our beautiful realm. Rest assured that should you follow the precautions outlined in our guide, you will be quite safe, as it is the council’s intention to provide this book as a resource so that future mishaps might be avoided . . .

Über die Autorin bzw. den Autor
Larry MacDougall is an award-winning illustrator living in Stoney Creek, Ontario. Some of his recent projects include The Secret History of Giants, Eragon’s Guide to Alagaesia, and The Secret History of Hobgoblins. His work has been published in Spectrum Illustration Annuals for science fiction and fantasy art, and he won a Silver Award in Spectrum Annual 15. Larry has always been interested in mythology, faerie tales, and folktales, so turning to Inuit mythology was a natural step for him. He especially enjoys illustrating Inuit myths.

The members of the Gwelf Council for Tourism and Trade proudly present the first guide to Gwelf ever formally published and distributed to the Southlands. We have taken it upon ourselves to create what we call a “Survival Guide” in the hope that it will encourage both tourists and adventurers to experience and explore our wonderous realm and learn what we have known for years: that Gwelf is an awe-inspiring land steeped in magic and beauty.
Survival is, of course, the critical term. Gwelf is little known in the Southlands and what is known is tainted by rumour and half-truth. Often described as haunted and perilous, we would like to assure tourist and adventurer alike that the Sparrows and other citizens of the territory have worked hard to create a haven of the riverbank and capital City of Gwelf. It is a place thrumming with activity, rich in culture, and a ready location for vacation, or launching point for voyage.
The town has grown, as with many urban centres, out of necessity and not strategy. Our lovely Gwelf is unrefined in that it has grown organically over the decades since the rift between Sparrowkind and Ravenkind, owing much of its aesthetic and construction to the landscape on which it was built and to the ingenuity and craftsmanship of the Badger inhabitants here. The safety is overseen by the Sparrows and their Particle Magics, trust that, at least within the city limits, no harm should befall you.
Artists, voyeurs, and free spirits are welcome additions in Gwelf, filling our pubs with new faces and stories over homebrewed elderflower ale or becoming a tea afficionado at the Rose and Nettle. Indeed, a free spirit could easily roam the city and surrounding farmlands peddling their artistic skill—be it in poetry, woodcraft, or even philosophy—in exchange for tea, lodging, and good company. More formal tourists will likely seek out a guide as soon as they cross the Grande River, preferring a safer, more catered overview of the civilized areas of Gwelf. If this is your path, be sure to book a visit to the Sparrow Archives, witness an exorcism, and have your guide take you to the Witch Market on Smoke Island at dusk.
Adventurers are our most cherished visitors. The treasures and tales brought back by adventurers are added to the memory banks of Gwelf citizens and inured into Gwelf’s Archives and history. It is to adventurers that we most highly recommend this survival guide as far too many adventurers have not returned from their explorations. This guide will help prepare and outfit any adventuring band, so that, whether the adventurer seek spiritual connection in the Graveyard at Raventag or high adventure in or beyond the Boreal Mountains, return might be more likely.
We, the Council, are like you, migrants from the Southlands who have turned immigrant through a love for this land. We are five independent business owners who have prospered in Gwelf. We invite you to join us in this world of opportunity. Whatever it is you dream for in life, you can find it here as a tourist, entrepreneur, or resident. The road north to Gwelf is long and an adventure in itself, but we are certain that this journey is only the beginning. You will in fact celebrate it.
