Belief in supernatural beings is a universal phenomenon.Every culture presents its own set of fantasticalinventions. Over the course of 11 centuries, the peopleof Iceland have produced an abundance of these creatures. This compendium describes 34 of them in wordsand paint. The texts that accompany the paintings aredrawn directly from Icelandic sagas and folklore, someof which have been translated for the first time. Theypresent a unique insight into a different paradigm, where fantasy and imagination played a key part inhuman experience. A culture where monsters, elvesand trolls dominated the dark unknown, and wherespells and sorcery shaped the world and the minds ofordinary people.
