Great Expectations depicts the personal growth and development of an orphan nicknamed Pip. It is set among marshes in Kent, and in London, in the early to mid-1800s, and contains some of Dickens' most memorable scenes, including the opening, in a graveyard, where the young Pip is accosted by the escaped convict, Abel Magwitch. Great Expectations is full of extreme imagery - poverty; prison ships and chains, and fights to the death - and has a colourful cast of characters who have entered popular culture. These include the eccentric Miss Havisham, the beautiful but cold Estella, and Joe, the kind and generous blacksmith. Dickens's themes include wealth and poverty, love and rejection, and the eventual triumph of good over evil. Great Expectations is popular both with readers and literary critics, and has been translated into many languages, and adapted numerous times into various media. It is Dickens's second novel, after David Copperfield, to be fully narrated in the first person. Upon its release, the novel received near universal acclaim. George Bernard Shaw praised the novel, as "All of one piece and consistently truthfull."

Über die Autorin bzw. den Autor

Charles Dickens (1812-1870) was an English novelist and social critic who is widely regarded as one of the greatest writers of the Victorian era. Born in Portsmouth, England, Dickens experienced a difficult childhood marked by poverty and hardship. He began his writing career as a journalist and soon turned to fiction, publishing his first novel, The Pickwick Papers, in 1836. Over the course of his career, Dickens wrote numerous works that have become classics of English literature, including Oliver Twist, Great Expectations, A Tale of Two Cities and, of course, David Copperfield. His writing was known for its vivid characters, sharp social commentary and compelling storytelling. In addition to his literary work, Dickens was also a social activist who advocated for better working conditions for the poor and spoke out against social inequality. He was a philanthropist who worked to establish a home for fallen women and children, and he gave numerous public readings of his work to raise money for charitable causes. Dickens's work continues to be celebrated and studied today, and his influence on English literature and culture is immeasurable.
