On Benefits is a series of moral essays written by Seneca concerning the importance of giving and receiving gifts and the role of gratitude within the context of Stoic ethics. Seneca reasons that the giving of gifts is the most important thing that morally binds humans in society. Seneca’s work is part of the most important contributions to the dialogue of Stoic Philosophy bridging the Greek and Roman worlds.Lucius Annaeus Seneca was a Roman aristocrat during the first century. He served as a close advisor and tutor to the Emperor of Rome, Nero. Seneca’s closeness to the emperor eventually lend to his downfall demise during one of Nero’s destructive episodes. Philosophy and writing were a much-needed antidote to the venomous world in which Seneca operated.
