This is the story of a family wanting to live a simpler life, and create a community. Emma and Tom Lane did just that, and the farm and associated award-winning restaurant they've established in Byron Bay, Australia, has become a diverse community of its own, made up of organic growers, chefs, bakers – all connected by the common values of simplicity, sustainability and farm-fresh food.
In The Farm Community they share their vision. Alongside tales of the people who have helped to make The Farm what it is today, you will find recipes collected from across The Farm’s community, celebrating a shared love of growing and cooking, as well as rewarding projects like making your own compost bucket, companion planting and drying flowers.
Chapters cover The Market Garden, Fruit & Nuts, Flowers & Herbs, Hunt & Gather, The Farmyard, and Bakery & Dairy, and each includes sustainable projects and beautiful recipes.

Emma was born and raised in England. After 12 years of corporate life in London, she fled the urban jungle for the wide, open spaces of Australia. What followed was a year long sabbatical exploring our sunburnt country. During this time Emma fell under the magical spell of Australia. She secured a marketing job in Sydney and the rest, they say, is history. She met Tom and they traded their big-city lives in fast-paced jobs to establish The Farm at Byron Bay, to create a different life for themselves and their four children, where they could understand where their food comes from, develop a love of the land and feel a real sense of community.
Tom grew up in Sydney and enjoyed a career in the corporate world of retail, marketing and brand management, working his way up from the factory floor to the board room of an ASX listed company. Tom spent almost half his life living on the family’s working cattle property in the southern tablelands of New South Wales where his passion for the land was born. He met Emma and they traded their big-city lives in fast-paced jobs to establish The Farm at Byron Bay, to create a different life for themselves and their four children, where they could understand where their food comes from, develop a love of the land and feel a real sense of community.
