In 1840, fourteen-year-old Tobias Laird flees his home in Tunbridge (now known as Tonbridge), Kent, following a vicious beating at the hands of his father.
With little money and no knowledge of the outside world, he meets Big Yank, an American bricklayer, who takes him under his wing and impresses upon him not to get involved with the navvies who are building the new track from the Brighton Line going through Tunbridge to Dover.
Tobias, now calling himself Thomas, is forced to strike out on his own when he discovers he is being sought by his father. As he navigates the harsh new environment, he is determined that one day he will find work on The Permanent Way.
