Hierarchical structures left over from our feudal past - governments, bureaucracies, monopolies, armies – still order our world today. Their salient feature is that they all value their own survival ahead of the general good. This compels them to use the commons destructively. They create crises but cannot resolve them. This is not a promising survival strategy.

There is another way. Structures based on individual empowerment and designed to encourage self-organization can connect our personal beliefs in a responsible manner to the unfolding future of our world. They are straightforward to create if we want them.
