In this work of speculative fiction, Sage Rivers lives in the desert among The Families, a group of separatists who have renounced technology because of its dehumanizing effects. So far, The Families have managed to live far from the blight of that transformed world. In fact, through diligence and creative interdependence, they've managed to thrive.
Sage, however, is an anomaly. On one hand, she accepts The Families' denial of the machine world, mostly because she trusts her father's judgement. On the other hand, Sage is also curious about her father's past. What happened in that other world to make him so fearful of its machines? What secrets might lie behind his silence?
Like other young members of The Families, Sage chases at the ban on technology. That's why breaking the ban is so much fun, especially with her besy friend, Zoe Parker, who flouts the rules when she contacts the world outside Endeavor. Together, Sage and Zoe dream of going back to that other world, back to California where The Families all started.
