Welcome to the Story of Life - The Three Eras and Beyond. This novel reflects my thinking on what life is all about and even though it is my thinking some will recognize that there are significant doctrinal parallels to the Plan of Salvation as taught in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The book is also my way of commemorating the bicentennial year. The Plan of Salvation is the reason for the Restoration of the gospel and what a great purpose it has. This book is to help us better realize what the restoration has given us. The book has four chapters. In the first chapter I attempt to explain the fundamentals of the Plan of Salvation and give context to it. I have taken literary license and made some minor speculations about our premortal existence but on the whole it is meant to be doctrinally sound. I will try to identify in footnotes where doctrine ends and literary license begins. The second chapter is very ambitious in its purpose. I am trying to convey what I have spiritually experienced in my life and how these life altering experiences are related to the Plan of Salvation. Also how they relate to practical life - life’s experiences with all its unexpected challenges and life stretching opportunities. I have found great lessons there but it will be more difficult to boil the lessons down to a specific learning because many of the lessons are not so simple and can be very involved. It may be more like reading the Savior’s parables, you will need to have eyes to see and ears to hear to potentially get what is there. Just as in real life, it will be easier to see if you have faith that there is something of value there. Ultimately you will be the judge as to whether there is value there or not. However, there are many examples of how the Lord can bless our lives even though we are mortal and are less than perfect. The third chapter gives a brief description of what we can expect after this mortality. It is brief because we really don’t know that much right now about postmortal specifics. What is there deals with the Plan of Salvation. The fourth chapter summarizes what the various results of life can lead to in eternity. The following is a brief excerpt: The Parable of the Modest Mother. A number of years ago in our ward a very young family joined the church. The mother was very young and very beautiful. Owing to the fact that they had just joined the church, she sometimes could have been a bit more modestly dressed. There was an older couple in the ward that was getting ready to read her the riot act. I was the older couple’s home teacher (ministering brother) and after much persuasion was able to convince them that we should help them by giving them some time to make adjustments and learn in good time and not expect perfection all at once. Thankfully, they did give the sister some time and in time, as the family learned more, they more fully lived gospel standards. About a year later the mother got up in a fast and testimony meeting and related the following experience with her daughters. They were out buying new swimsuits for the season. Her oldest daughter selected a very modest, one piece bathing suit. However, her younger daughter said that she did not want a one piece suit. She wanted a two piece just like mom. It took some doing to get a modest suit for the younger girl. The mother then conveyed in her testimony that she now could understand why we cannot just talk the talk, but we must walk the walk. How important it is for us to set a good example if we want to be taken seriously. Especially if we want what is best for our family. And that is the parable of the modest mother.
