Calla Wilkinson should obey the rules of the immediate empire. There's no reason not to, considering they were made to keep her and the other members of the elite alive.
But she can't.
The year is 2145, and humans are starving. The world's livestock industry has been decimated, and governments begin to fall when they can no longer provide for their citizens. Amidst the turmoil, the wealthiest people around the globe form a new empire called The Power Elite and create a new source of food called "nutrimen", a species derived from the DNA of the only remaining mammals--humans.
When Calla is transferred to work in the kennels where the nutrimen are penned, she is immediately captivated by one of the younger females she names April. Over a period of a few months a strong bond is formed between the two, and Calla can't accept the fact that April will soon be harvested to feed her and the other members of the Elite.
In an attempt to save the young nutrimen, she jeopardizes herself and her family by disobeying the rules and ultimately has to decide if she should attempt to change a society that will do whatever it takes to survive, or conform to the new social order and accept that April's fate has been predetermined.
BORN AND RAISED is the first book in the highly suspenseful IMMEDIATE EMPIRE trilogy. A must read for anyone looking for their next page-turner!
"Doty presents a tale of a dystopian future society featuring inhabitants at the greatest extremes of class stratification: predators and prey. The author manages to make the reader empathize with both the perpetrators and the victims in this cruel world, whether they're numbed by trauma or ignorant of the true horror that surrounds them. Readers will also likely consider what their own place would be in such a society. Stark prose heightens the story's tension and realism. An exciting series starter, featuring an intriguing world with a breadth of characters and themes."
