“A good boss makes his men think they have more ability than they have so they consistently do better work than they thought they could.” – Charles Erwin Wilson Supervising others is challenging and rewarding. Some days it is frustrating. Other days you’re riding high. The first-line supervisor is critical to an organization’s success—whether company leadership knows it or not. None of us are perfect supervisors. We can all be better. Being a supervisor carries the responsibility to achieve results, develop our people, continuously learn, and look for opportunities to change things for the better. A big responsibility. Develop a network of other supervisors as your support team. You’ll need them, and they’ll need you as well.

Penny Miller spent 21 years in the United States Air Force, working in the human resources arena. Her last assignment was as a squadron commander, overseeing human resources for a large installation. It was in the armed forces that she developed a deep appreciation for the first-line supervisory role and its importance in organizational excellence. That passion stayed with her in corporate HR. In 2007, she founded Venture HRO, LLC, later renamed My HR Department, an HR consulting company. Most of her practice centers around training and coaching organizational leaders, with her primary focus on those leading “in the trenches,” where the War for Profit is waged.
