Inhaltsangabe

This collection of 24 papers reflects selected works from 25 years of continued applied research and writing across a variety of topic areas in Software, Security, IT, and more. The thematic organization of this retrospective is meant to group papers of like focus together in volumes or chapters allowing readers to choose their own path through the collection. From the Foreword: “James Cusick’s Collected Papers on Software, Security, and Information Technology reflect the last twenty-five-years of a career in software development, applied research and IT operations. His approach is informed by experience working in the increasingly complex environments that challenge today’s developers and IT operations engineers. This collection of papers reflects a mature, repeatable methodology, that when followed properly, produces well-engineered and scalable software and solutions. This is not a book of theories, it is a practical guide based on James’s wealth of experience in industry and academia. The concepts have been proven in the successful deployment of numerous systems and the timing of this collection could not be better. We are at the start of a major transition; deploying the next generation of secure and scalable applications. James provides the guidance to successfully architect and deploy them”.Thus, the collection starts with Innovation, Information Security, and Software Process. The next sections cover IT architecture, performance, reliability, operations, and management. Following these highly practical papers are a set of papers covering some advanced concepts in technology evaluation, framework analysis, biological computing and the new area of Single Board Computing. Finally, the collection ends with papers covering the History of Science in Japan as well as learnings from teaching Software Engineering and a guide to writing for Science and Engineering. The diversity of topics included in this book allows for a variety of uses by different readers. These papers were originally written for a technical audience. However, some papers are written in a general tone which can be accessible for any interested reader. This is especially true for the papers covering innovation, technical writing, software process, and even the articles on Information Security. These are all very approachable but also provide value to the expert. Digging deeper into the book the articles covering more complex technical topics such as architecture, reliability, performance engineering, and advanced technologies are more apt to find an audience with technical practitioners, students, and researchers. This is also true for the papers on teaching and writing for engineering which might be appreciated by educators, students, and researchers. Finally, I would think that most readers could find interest in the papers covering organizational development and the historical papers covering technology development. Those are often universal themes of interest to many.No matter the background of the reader or their specific interests, this book provides a wide array of subject areas with each one presented in sufficient detail to understand the premise, background, approach, and results. These papers have also stood the test of time and reflect longstanding practical approaches which can be applied and adapted to today’s IT and business environment.
