Joe Crowe grew up in one suburb of St. Paul, Minnesota, and currently resides in a different one. He earned his BA in writing from the University of Minnesota, where he also worked as a DJ at the student-run campus radio station. Joe has enjoyed two simultaneous and overlapping money-paying careers so far, working both in the supermarket industry in the Twin Cities for many years, and a long stint in the tutoring programs at two local community colleges. Stony Point Station is his initial effort at a third money-paying career. The closest Joe has been to orbit was meeting real-life astronaut Mark Kelly at Kennedy Space Center, and standing fifteen feet beneath Discovery in the Orbiter Processing Facility which lay in the shadow of the VAB at NASA. “I gravitate to reading stories that drop relatively normal folks into challenging, chaotic and dangerous world-shaking events and then watch as they either rise to become heroes or fall into depravity. In high school and college I found myself at the end-of-the world with Larry Niven and Jerry Pournelle (Lucifer's Hammer, Footfall) and Stephen King (The Stand) and later devoured the alternate history worlds of Harry Turtledove and S. M. Stirling. In my own writing, I hope to evoke some semblance of what I felt reading those stories: journeying with my characters, feeling what they feel as they discover themselves and each other in the midst of destruction and despair. Stony Point Station was inspired by a visit to Split Rock Lighthouse on the north shore of Lake Superior. I was struck by the remoteness of the lighthouse, it's vital importance to commerce, and the stark isolation faced by the workers and families that made it their home.”
