As a late teen, I met and married another farm kid who also loved exploring. Our earliest camping experience was as newlyweds in 1956. He removed the back seat of our 1955 Plymouth sedan and replaced it with a mattress. Our first overnight was on a dark night in mountain country. We awakened to cattle peering in our window! We made lasting memories family camping and traveling. We hoped for early retirement and that his mechanical ability and my secretarial skills would support a full-time RVing lifestyles where we used our free time to explore. In 1982, my husband died of a heart condition at 47. Four years later, I quit my job and moved into a 25’ used mini-motorhome. On September 4, 1986, I hit the road with six wheels, a North American map, and a sense of humor. Over the next 20 years, happy chances and serendipity took me 633 miles below our border to live on the beach in Baja for six months. Serendipity took me to Alaska five times. A sign about “The untouched Alaskan wilderness,” triggered a 500-mile Yukon River trip in a 17’ canoe in North America’s fifth largest river. I drove the Dalton to Deadhorse, Alaska, and mushed sled dogs on Seward’s Godwin Glacier. Happy chances took me to Old Mexico for a Copper Canyon train trip to where people were living in caves 400 miles below our border. Herding my 454 Chevy horses on to a 2500-acre dude ranch in Oregon’s Blue Mountains, allowed me to serve meals, clean cabins, and do my bit to preserve history. Driving the Translabrador Highway from Goose Bay to Baie Comeau, Quebec, was a fantastic adventure, as was flying to Churchill, Manitoba, Canada, to visit the polar bears. From the Blue Ridge Mountains to the Cascades, I’ve criss-crossed the lower 48 States, RV rafting the Mississippi River, paragliding off a Colorado mountain, and mule riding the Grand Canyon. I’ve visited all 50 states and 48 of our national parks. I am often asked how I “planned” my trips. Planned? I usually knew I was going east, west, north, or south, but serendipity handled the rest.
