Repentance is central to the gospel. The ministry of Jesus begins with a call to repent, and the theme appears again and again. One of Jesus' lessons compares us in our natural state to trees without fruit. In this state, we are failing at our purpose and simply taking up space. Unless we are changed, we will be cut down. Another of Jesus' lessons tells us that we are like ungrateful children who have left home. We then proceed to waste the riches that we have received. Once we are reduced to poverty, we may receive the ability to see clearly what we have done. Having repented, we can return to a loving father who will welcome us. In other lessons, Jesus shows us that we have been entrusted with things that do not belong to us. We may abuse our position for a time, but we will eventually have to give an account. If we are granted to understand that God owns everything, we are no longer slaves to the things themselves.
