As the subtitle, Freestyle, indicates, “this poetry” arises, coeval, with life-lived, on the cusp of experience. In many cases, these pieces manifest thought transcripts, written on the run and entirely embedded in the moments of everyday experience: back-pocket notepads accompanying the writer, perpetually; and when forgotten or lost, a bar-napkin, sales receipt, margins of other publications, bus schedules/ menus; could be, literally, perambulatory (like INCOHERENCE, a scroll of printer-paper (and a bottle of Myer’s Dark) tagging along for an extended weekend of carousing and composition, sleeping on park benches, writing on the train, …until the ream ran out); OR: on the ferry, on the steering-wheel (risking death), in the notebook, ignoring the instruction; and, late-night/early-morning, not bothering to turn on a light, scrawling in the darkness wordthoughts that precluded slumber, hoping for dawn legibility… revelation of the immediately incomprehensible, or at least too big to deal with, on the edge of consciousness (which is probably true, as well, with regard to Life, in general, no?). A stab into the dark, a reach for the light and color of the skies, desperate measures for breathtaking times… the courage to let wordz do their talkings—unfiltered, free both in style and thought and, as a perhaps most vital consequence, honest to a fault, if need be.
