This is another travelogue from the author of "No Ordinary Book." Philip has travelled widely in his role as translation and linguistic consultant, and Ramblings of an Irishman takes us beyond Ivory Coast and Cameroon, the UK and Europe to Madagascar, China and Zambia. His obvious enjoyment of relating across cultures, and sharing the humour which his experiences inevitably bring, make for funny and insightful reading. There are also memories of a childhood spent in Libya and Singapore: Philip’s family moved around the world with his father’s job, spending no more than four years in any one location. He sees this as a privilege, allowing him to appreciate the positive in all the cultures he has encountered. He lived in Hereford, Dublin, Edinburgh and Belfast during his teens and twenties, before moving further afield from the age of thirty. As we join Philip in his Ramblings, we are drawn into a fascinating and unique perspective on the world, which includes constant awareness of language, sensitivity to the challenges of translation and relationships, and pure enjoyment of the exotic variety he observes in the natural universe. Most of the chapters are self-contained, focusing on stories from a particular city or country. This is a book to be picked up and dipped into when you have a few minutes to spare. You will be transported to another part of the world, and you are in for a treat. Philip has worked since 2003 for the Seed Company, an affiliate of Wycliffe Bible Translators and SIL, charities involved in development work in many countries.
