A Woman's Place is in the House: why we need more women MPs and how to become one - Softcover

Inhaltsangabe

This book reveals behind the scenes conversations with female MPs about what life is really like in the Commons in 2019. Some MPs are household names and some less famous. They reflect on the struggle for equality (since 1792) and how the UK is faring in the 21st century. The interviews are set together with research and data about women’s equality and the overwhelming evidence showing that better female representation in Parliaments around the globe, leads to better government. The MPs are a cross section from the four main UK parties, some noted for their stance on women’s rights and some not. The book highlights some fascinating historical achievements by female MPs and how many were decades ahead of their time. There is an explanation of how to become an MP and tips on dealing with selection committees. Also a brief overview of the structure of the UK Parliament, what an MP is responsible for and how Parliament relates to local government. In the wake of Trump and many increasingly authoritarian nationalist and religious governments around the globe, there has been a backlash against women’s rights over the last five years, which is creating a new wave of feminism. The time is long overdue for better female representation at all levels of public life and this book aims to encourage more women to enter politics. With the on-going shambles over Brexit, many of the British public are deeply sceptical of politicians, their integrity and what they stand for. What better time then for a new breed of genuine, non-political women to step up and improve politics?
