Landseer was a kind of wonder boy whose artistic talents were early recognized; he studied with several artists, including Benjamin Robert Haydon, a well known and controversial painter who encouraged the young Landseer to perform dissections to fully understand the muscle and skeletal animal structure.In 1815, when he was still 13 years old, Landseer had already exhibited his works at the British Royal Academy. Landseer was appointed an associate of the Royal Academy at the age of 24, and five years later, in 1831, he became an academic. In 1850, he was named a Knight, and although he was elected president of the Royal Academy in 1866, Landseer refused the invitation.Landseer was a notable figure in 19th century English art, and his works can be found at the Tate Britain, the Victoria and Albert Museum, the Kenwood House and the Wallace Collection in London. He also collaborated with his fellow painter Frederick Richard Lee.Today, it is believed that at the end of his 30 years, Landseer suffered a total nervous breakdown and, for the rest of his lifetime, experienced repeated episodes of melancholy, hypochondria, and depression, often compounded by the use of alcohol and drugs. In July 1872, he was declared insane by his family.In his works, Sir Edwin Henry Landseer portrayed animal anatomy with great skill and, therefore, tended to humanize and sentimentalize these characteristics to tell a sentimental story or show a morality. Among the best-known works of this period are The Chief Shepherd's Mourner (1837, V & A, London), Dignity and Impudence (1839, Tate, London), and The Monarch of the Glen (1850).
