This book is a collection of letters written by Private James Thomas Denham to his father, Thomas, while he served in the Civil War. The letters were gifted to the Penfield Historical Society by his great grandson, Raymond Denham. The Denham family originated from Greenock, Scotland traveling by ship and sailing on the Roger Stuart; arriving in New York City in 1835. James was born the 31st of May, 1844 in Elyria, Ohio. He grew up on the family farm located in Penfield Township in Grafton, Ohio where they raised dairy and livestock including sheep, and pigs. To this day, the farm has been in the family for more than 178 years. It is still a working farm and the original house remains the Denham family home.
