Then the world changed: The Germans invade their country, and so do the Soviets. Poland's military falters and the government flees into exile. Many young men disappear into the forests then, fading away to fight any way they can. Her mother's family are forest people. They know the legends of beasts and ghosts and witches within . . . and that some of the stories are true. As for the museum, the Curator is Jewish and had to flee as well. Now the Germans have started hauling away the museum’s treasures. Felka is sure they will be asking about the missing items on the inventory.
