Rachel Ruysch, also Rahel Ruysch (1664-1750), was a Flemish Baroque still-life painter. Because of their popularity and the exceptional quality of her paintings, she received exceptionally high prizes. Despite great demand, she worked on her paintings for a long time and remained faithful to her requirements on her art throughout the years. In her creative period of more than 65 years, the earliest dated picture comes from 1681, the last from 1747.It was not only in the Netherlands that her style influenced generations of flower painters. She was the model for Jacoba van Nickelen, daughter of Jan van Nickelen. Her bouquets of flowers against a dark background appear opulent. All light is concentrated on the flowers, delicate grasses set accents. Sharp light-dark contrasts, subdued brown contours and the intensive interplay of cold and warm colors create high plasticity. Even more than her predecessors and teachers, Ruysch combines a wide variety of flowers into a rich selection. She will have benefited from the extensive botany collection of her father, who had built up and cataloged the Amsterdam Botany as one of the wealthiest plant collections. She will probably have made her first sketches there. A painting made by Michiel van Musscher shows some of her drawings. However, none of her original collections have survived.
