It is hard to find a penny dreadful more lurid than The String of Pearls, with its account of a sinister barber who murders his wealthy customers and turns the citizens of London into unwitting cannibals when he gives the butchered corpses to a maker of popular meat pies. This expanded version of the story is (originally) 732 pages long, and its conclusion differs greatly from that of the original serial publication: Todd escapes from prison after being sentenced to death and has many further adventures.
