The Colonial Group is a huge part of the story of the Port of Savannah, which I have been photographing for a number of years. I was delighted that Colonial gave me permission to photograph their Georgia Kaolin Terminal, known as GKT for short.The primary functions of GKT are two-fold. First and the most dramatic is receiving in by ship bulk dry cement, storing it in GKT’s silo system and dispensing it into bulk carrier trucks. Second is receiving railroad car loads of Kaolin clay powder and breaking it down into super sacks, which are large bags, for shipment in ship containers bound for destinations around the world.The purpose of this photo study is to provide pictorial examples of how primary bulk materials are handled in one of America’s major ports.
