This new book from the Squirrel Hill series written for reading aloud to young children ages 4-7, continues the warm, delightful tales begun in the earlier books of the series—Crossing Briar Woo (2018), Just an Ordinary Elephant and The Bald Cardinal (2018), and Stories from Squirrel Hill: Book One (2019). They tell, along with charming illustrations by Ray Driver, the story of Madison, a young girl who lives on Squirrel Hill in a farmhouse with her three plush animals—Ellie, Kitty and Monk-Monk. They are her best friends, but not her only friends. Many animals who are not so plush also live on Squirrel Hill, and no one seems to care much who is plush and who isn’t. In Book Two, readers meet many new visitors to Squirrel Hill. There is Wynnie, a beautiful whooping crane who crashes into the pond. Ellie helps rescue her from the pond and her own adventures on Squirrel Hill begin. Silas, a skinny little duck, decides to migrate — North. His travels take him far from his friends on the Hill. In another tale, Monk-Monk races Madison to the top of an apple tree. Unfortunately, he falls from the tree and is injured. Never one to take injury lying down, Monk-Monk makes a new friend. The remaining stories in Book Two introduce readers to The Shaggy Waggy Dog, Arthur X. Arthur Jr., and a Snark, and finally two lost and hungry baby kittens, Kick and Boo. The first stories about Squirrel Hill received excellent reviews from well-known reviewers in children’s literature. Blue Ink Review says that “each character is distinct, with gentle charms that recall the animals in Winnie the Pooh.” Foreword Reviews gives the stories four stars and notes that “valuable life lessons and positive morals are present but not overt.” These stories are the perfect length for character building exercises or values education programs.” And Kirkus Reviews calls them “enjoyably old-fashioned tales with charm, wit and an appreciation of kindness.” Children will love sharing these stories with parents, teachers or other adult readers. Squirrel Hill is simply a place where curiosity and imagination are always nearby.
