Inhaltsangabe

Matthias Grünewald in 1511 became Uriel's court artist at the Archbishop of Mainz. In 1512, Grünewald settled in nearby Frankfurt, where archives show that he bought a house and married. From 1512 to 1514 he worked on the Isenheim Altarpiece. In 1527 Grünewald entered the service of a wealthy and noble family, von Erbach. He probably died in 1532, although the sources are different. Some art historians associate Matthias Grünewald with the Reformation or with the support of the lower classes. He may have left Archbishop of Mainz because of the sympathy he has with the German Peasant war, or for the sake of Lutherism. In his small surviving corpus of works are included only religious works, the most famous of which is Isenheim Altarpiece, completed in 1515. The nine images of this Altarpiece on twelve panels are arranged on double wings to present three views, according to the season or some other occasion. The first view with closed outer wings shows the crucifixion of Saint Sebastian and St. Anthony.Other his works are nowadays in Munich, Karlsruhe, Aschaffenburg, and Stuppach. A total of four dark and awe-inspiring images of the Crucifix were survived. The visionary character of his work, with his striking color and line, is in sharp contrast to Durer's works. The paintings of Matthias Grünewald are known for their dramatic shapes, bright colors, and light display.By the end of his century, when the Holy Roman Emperor Rudolf II had begun to get as many Durer paintings as possible, it was accepted that Dürer painted Isenheim Altarpiece. At the end of the nineteenth century, Matthias Grünewald was rediscovered and became something of a cult figure, with his images loaded with expressionism - and the absence of any direct classicism - especially in Isenheim Altarpiece, attracting both German nationalists and modernists. His apparent sympathy for the peasants in the Peasant's War also brought him admiration by the political left.
