A nine year old boy in 1964 living in a dysfunctional family finds a friend in a neighbour who teaches him to play classical guitar. She is also in an abusive relationship and finds his friendship strengthens her. Together they develop a better sense of self and face their problems. The book explores the particular prejudices and lifestyles of 1964 in Sydney. It also looks at families and how they shape the future generations.
