Substance Abuse Treatment in Recovery was written to introduce clinical social workers, psychologists and addiction counselors to the importance of assessment, and service planning in recovery-oriented systems of care.The book is addressed to three types of learners: (1) under-graduates majoring in human services, such as addiction counseling, social work, psychology, etc. There is an expectation that undergraduate students will have completed an introductory course in Addictions and/or an introductory course in Psychology prior to reading this textbook: (2) graduate students in social work or counsel-ing psychology who are interested in assessment and treatment planning of chemically dependent individuals and (3) continuing education for certified peer specialists and professionals already working in the behavioral health field who have an interest in a basis review of the medical and social models of service and treatment planning and how it relates to clinical evaluation.The book is divided into two main sections the medical model and the social model of assessment and planning. The text begins with a discussion of human development, helping relationship, drugs and brain function, and screening and assessment. Chapter 5 begins with the cognitive and behavioral aspects of a mental status evaluation, which culminates with the differential diagnosis. The book than discusses substance use disorders and the various levels of care. It proceeds through disorders associated with substance use such as, mood, anxiety, and personality disorders. Under medical conditions it provides information on HIV/AIDS and Hepatitis C is provided as well as all of the psychosocial and environmental problems in the DSM. Chapter 7 discusses case management in the substance abuse field. Particular attention is given to Levels of Care, Patient Placement Criteria and social action initiatives. The second part of the text (Social Model) is an introduction to community empowerment models of recovery, person first assessment and planning issues that supports recovery. The text ends with the self-help movement and its impact on effective service planning and self-empowerment in recovery.
